Why does "everyone" say playing an instrument is an awesome stress relief?

I get stressed whenever I practice or play… and -especially- when someone is watching or I have to perform for someone. If anything, picking up an instrument has made me for anxiety stricken over these past years.
I associate the feeling of practicing/playing in front of people with public speaking. Yuck!

I find it very relieving. I guess it depends on the person. For example, I chose to play all the instruments I have (drums, bass, guitar, violin, piano), because I love music and couldn’t imagine my life without it. But a guy who picks up a guitar to be cool, will probably find practicing stressful or an annoyance, I don’t mean to say you picked up whatever instrument you play to be cool, haha, you could be a different story, I don’t know you to judge. But yeah, point of the story, everybodies different, and they all have different ways of relieving stress.

Different things work for different people… A lot of guys consider video games like "Call of duty" a great stress relief… Now if you go ask a girl if she would consider that as a stress reliever, odds are your answer would be something along the lines of "Hell no…"

It takes the stress away when I’m alone…when I’m around people though, I get anxious

As you yourself can attest to, one will be SOOOO stressed out playing your instrument (yes, this happened to me playing in front of people too & like you, public speaking as well); that you will have absolutely NO time what-so-ever to worry of life’s other inconsequential problems such as war, world hunger, global warming, etc.,etc., etc. Now, go play that instrument!!!

It just depends on the person. If you’re a person who just loves music more than anything in the world, you’ll find it a great escape to play and "get away from the world." If you really love music you’ll just love the chance to get to practice and perform your talent for others. Performing for others is just something not everyone is good at though, and normal to be nervous.
